The Boy Who Loved Hearses
Nicholas Kalikow 2006 | Documentary, Feature
While my mom took me to dance classes, this dedicated mother took her son to professional cars meets. The love between mother and son is something anyone can relate to, but the formula is different. This kid was not normal, but misjudged on his quirkiness. He found his niche with the car enthusiasts. The shots of the professional cars made me want a 1968 Superior Cadillac Rescuer Ambulance. One downside, there are a lot of "talking heads" interviews, but the characters are compelling enough to keep you watching.

Infidel
Peter O'Keefe 2006 | Drama, Feature
The lead actor was pretty good (the main hitman) and some of the visuals were kinda interesting, but it just wasn't for me. If you like El Evangelista or "Touched by an Angel," then you would probably like this film.

Trevor's In Heaven
Alec Brownstein 2006 | Comedy, Shorts
The short starts out as one of those sappy war films that's supposed to pull at your patriotism strings and get you to enlist... and then it turns into a hysterical dying wishes story about the soldier's dysfunctional family. I could have this on loop and not get tired of it. It's comedy gold!

Beyond Life
Navanil Das 2006 | Drama, Feature
Yes, this film is about abortion... no, it is not what you think it is. The storyline of the partial birth abortion had a different take and was not left or right... it was a pretty well rounded portrayal of the lives surrounding the decision. While the acting felt a little lifetime-y at some points, the color palette helped to orchestrate the turmoil felt by the lead. Whether you are pro-choice or pro-life, this film was an interesting drama/psychological thriller.

Crossing a Painted Vesuvius
Luciano De Fraia | Documentary, Experimental, Feature, Foreign
The vignettes of the artists are both educational and interesting, though some more than others. The artist who dedicates his work to Batman rocked while the performance artist gave me chills. I really liked the segment with the pair of painters showing their art in motion, mixing painting and performance. The music was great and fresh. One warning, though: some of the subtitles are stacked 3-4 lines long, so if you don't know Italian, you better be a speed reader. This only happens maybe a third of the time, though... the rest is easy to read while still taking in the beautiful art. Viewed as individual segments or all in one sitting, this film is a unique showcase of modern art.

Michael Jacobs 2004 | Cultural, Documentary, Music, Shorts
This is a beautifully shot short showcasing religion, the environment, and the overall cultures of the countries showcased. It makes me want to dig my passport out and see the world.

Credo
Keith Snyder 2005 | Comedy, Musical, Shorts
This short is very unique. The film has one singer through the whole thing (who, btw, has a fantastic voice), and it flipped between looking like a serious religious piece and an SNL digital short. I had a couple of wtf moments watching it. Upon second viewing, I appreciated the mix of great music and beautiful church architecture. The singer is quite a character!

Visiting Shane
Varda Hardy 2006 | Documentary, Feature
This film was kinda depressing, but not necessarily in a bad way. Shane is a comic book artist who has lost his motor skills due to his illness. As an artist myself, I don't know what I would do if I could no longer do what I love. Shane is surrounded by interesting and loving characters as he lies in his hospital bed, knowing he is going to die. If you like the TLC/BBC medical-human interest documentaries, you'll like this film.

Double Spaced
Brendan Borrell 2006 | Comedy, Feature
This film was fun to watch. There were a couple of points where it got a little cheesy, but the professor character is crazy hilarious. Plus, the actors look like they had so much fun making it! It's great escapism. For those who are in grad school, were in grad school, know someone in grad school, or simply enjoy comedy hijinks, it's worth watching.

Space Thing
Tim Busko 2004 | Experimental, Shorts
My first viewing of this was at 4am when I was loopy... not the best time to watch a crazy fast edit b&w film. Upon second viewing, I found the editing and eerie sound effects to go together quite well and the high-contrast images could stand well alone hanging on a gallery wall. Not a film for the epileptic, but if you are an experimental film fan, it is worth viewing.
