Witchdoctors: A Day in the Other Africa
Anthony Peartin-Thomas, Boniface Wewe 2007 | Documentary, Feature
This film is interesting. At times the narration and storyline are lost, but the overall images and foreign way of life are so captivating that it kept my attention. I especially loved hearing the featured Sangomas and boys choir speak; so much so that I would have liked to have heard more of the native language instead of the narration. I believe the intended purpose of this documentary was achieved by showing another, less-stereotypical side of African life, and that 'Witchdoctors' can be used to open the eyes and minds of viewers of all ages!

A Joyce Story
Pete Guzzo 2003 | Comedy, Feature
I used to bartend in my younger days, so this film was somewhat easy to relate to. Though I have never owned a bar or been on the brink of a divorce. Or eaten a ton of chicken wings and canned beans. Anyway, the characters in this film are goofy, and it is pretty predictable what will happen towards the end. I have to admit the drunk goggle guys/girls was my favorite part. Overall, A Joyce Story could be enjoyable for a couple of old bar friends to watch over a beer or two. Or three or four depending on if you like the film! I needed a six pack, personally.

The Girl
Jake Jarvi 2006 | Action, Comedy, Drama, Feature
I have to admit, I really enjoyed this film. The acting is above average and the way in which the story is told is captivating. The writing is witty and although there are a few rough or odd spots here and there (both visually and plot wise), the overall feel and finished product is enough to get my attention and praise. It vaguely reminds me of an early Tarantino flick meets a creepy Something About Mary, but in a good way. Jake Jarvi makes a big splash into the indie scene with this one, and in my opinion, his work will only get better with time!

Shoot George
Adam Nadler 2002 | Comedy, Feature
Following this film and its characters is relatively easy, as the story flows from beginning to end with believable acting and an overall great plot. I have to admit, I felt a bit more courageous once George got his hands on a gun, and it wasn't until I finished watching this film that I started to think about the underlying meanings within the film, which probably differ from person to person in my opinion. From violence to sex, this film covers many sources of power in our modern world, and shows us how quickly they come and go. Shoot George made me think about the strength and courage I posses in everyday life, and helped me find the source of it all, which so happens to be the 9MM in my waistband.

What is INDIE?
Dave Cool | Documentary, Feature, Music
I am not a musician, but this film makes me want to become one. An independent musician, free to make choices, work hard, and benefit solely from that which I mentioned. The best thing is, the information learned within this doc can be transferred easily into other artistic areas, such as film. Dave Cool brings in many different angles to accurately define "independent," ranging from art to business. The advice given in the special features is a must for those interested in living the indie life, offering several credible, honest interviews from industry professionals. This film ultimately clears the confusion and discovers what it takes to be truly independent.

Lasting Images
Hammond Hendrix 2006 | Documentary, Feature
So many death ceremonies, so little time. Though the topic itself is typically uneasy or uncomfortable for some, Hammond Hendrix found a way to pleasantly showcase many options available for when one's time comes. There are some alternatives that seem a bit bizarre and unique, but those are the ones that get you thinking... I wonder how big MY diamond would be? Maybe an old fashioned, American fiery display is exactly the send off I need... Oh, the possibilities!
